Redwood City, Calif., November 8, 2006 — Funambol, the mobile open source company, today announced it has won the 2006 Editors’ Choice Award from Linux Journal. The company won the award for its mobile application platform’s support of the most popular PDAs and commodity handsets.
“Being recognized by Linux Journal is a feather in the cap of the mobile open source community,” said Fabrizio Capobianco, CEO of Funambol. “The Funambol community is becoming recognized as one of the largest open source communities in the world, which is why we can deliver on the promise of device support and compatibility for mass consumer adoption of mobile email and other mobile services. Thanks both to the Linux Journal editors for this honorable recognition and to the community for its diligent work.”
Funambol continues to work with the community to develop the most sought after mobile application software components and to test the widest range of mobile devices. Two programs were recently announced to maximize this effort, Code Sniper (http://www.funambol.com/opensource/codesniper.php) and Phone Sniper (http://www.funambol.com/opensource/phonesniper.php).
Since its preview release earlier this year, the number of Funambol software downloads has more than doubled to 750,000, reflecting pent-up demand for mass market mobile applications. Carriers are increasingly interested in Funambol for its expected ability to reach the largely untapped market for consumer push email.
Other winners of the 2006 Linux Journal Editors’ Choice Awards included Apache, Digium, Lenovo, Mozilla, and Novell. A list of all the winners including Funambol is at http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/9368.
