Philippines’ Largest Carrier Adopts Funambol’s Mobile Open Source Platform

ePLDT will standardize on Funambol to deliver PIM services, mobile email and messaging to world’s largest SMS market

BARCELONA, Spain, February 14, 2006 — Funambol, the mobile open source software company, today announced that ePLDT — a wholly owned subsidiary of the Philippines’ largest carrier, PLDT — has chosen its mobile open source platform to deliver Personal Information Management (PIM), mobile email, and other data synchronization and management functions to its customers. PLDT is the largest carrier in the Philippines, which represents the biggest SMS market in the world.

ePLDT backs Sync123, the leading mobile PIM service in Asia powered by Funambol’s mobile open source platform and available at http://www.sync123.com.

“We manage more data per second than almost any other carrier on the planet, which makes compatibility among devices critical,” said Ray Espinosa, President, ePLDT. “Funambol’s mobile open source software takes care of compatibility for us with its community of developers and even takes our business a step further by giving ePLDT the control to offer branded mobile services directly to its customers.”

“Mobile open source software delivers significant advantages to operators around the globe,” said Fabrizio Capobianco, CEO of Funambol. “Carriers such as PLDT gain control over their value-added services and ultimately over their strategic product and service development roadmaps.”

SMS allows mobile phone users to send short text messages of 160 characters or less on their devices. The Philippines leads the world in SMS services. In 2004, 67 trillion SMS messages were sent by 33 million subscribers in the Philippines. Mobile email is expected to be the next killer app with mobile operator revenues from enterprise email and PIM alone expected to surpass $600 million by 2009, according to Research and Markets.

Funambol this month announced Funambol v3, the first open source push email product for carriers and enterprises. Funambol v3 is commercial open source software that implements the Open Mobile Alliance Device Management/Device Synchronization (OMA DM/DS) open standards, formerly known as SyncML.
